The Challenges of a Home-Based Business - In the Beginning

Welcome to Our Blog!  It is our hope that this platform will encourage our visitors to share their experiences, tips and overall wisdom of running a small business be it  Internet-based or bricks-and-mortar!  Please feel free to add your wit, charm, intelligence and business acumen to this blog so that all who read it will gain a positive experience by doing so.

"Where do I start?"  This might be the first question you have after you've made your decision to open your own business.  After you've come up with the reason for doing so, your product/service being offered, the name, the legal documents, financial info, etc...you're ready to put out the "OPEN" sign.  It's exciting and challenging all at once!

Today's Tip:
Whether you are a new, local business or a new business that offers your products/services world-wide, one thing is absolutely KEY to your success...
Marketing and Networking!

If no one knows you're "there", why would they seek you out??

Marketing and Networking go hand-in-hand.  Today, even if you are marketing your business through all forms of social media, are you networking within your local market? By this, I mean, are you "getting out in the community" meeting others face-to-face?

Getting started by networking in your community - not only through networking events, luncheons and seminars, but also through participation in community events, charitable causes and school functions - will provide you with a local base of clients/customers upon which to build your business.  For some, this is the stumbling block!  It's so much easier to hide behind the computer and "create"!  Make it #1 on your To Do List...think about ways to become involved in your community and local networking organizations...Be Visible!

If I only knew back when I started my own small business how important networking is, it would probably have been way more successful. Networking is definitely key!! For those that may not know a lot about networking I've included some information on how to begin: When starting your own business, join a networking group that already exists. Start in your own local community. Look first to see if there is already a networking group or business leads group running. Search the newspapers for the community calendar. Here, you will learn about meetings, their times, and locations. Join these existing groups and become an active member. Expect to pay dues of $50 to $200 a quarter to belong. Paying $200 a quarter is cheap when you look at the potential sales that can come from joining. Stick with it too. If after a quarter you don't seem to get anything from going, stick with it for another quarter just to make sure. It may take a year before you really start receiving referrals. This type of business comes with trust, and trust can take some time to develop. Usually these groups are made up of one representative from each type of profession (to eliminate competition within the group). Check to see if your profession is available. Remember that the power of these groups is that you have the audience of 10 - 20 professionals every week or month. These individuals become your sales people. Sooner or later, they are going to tell people about you. Referrals that are made by people we know and trust are the most successful. These leads are usually always the easiest to turn into sales. Again, networking is key to the success of your business. So get out there, make yourself visible, and show them what you got!!
